Additional Learning Needs (ALN)
At Nyth y Deryn, we are committed to providing a nurturing, inclusive and supportive learning environment where every pupil is valued and encouraged to achieve their full potential. We recognise that pupils have a wide range of strengths, needs and experiences, and we work closely with families, schools, local authority services and external professionals to ensure that individual needs are identified and supported effectively.
In line with the Welsh Government's Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act 2018, we adopt a person-centred approach that places pupils and their families at the heart of decision-making. Every pupil attending Nyth y Deryn has an Individual Development Plan (IDP) or receives support through carefully planned strategies, interventions and reasonable adjustments designed to help them access learning, develop confidence and achieve positive outcomes.
Our highly skilled staff team works collaboratively to provide tailored support that reflects each pupil's needs. This may include support with literacy and numeracy, communication and language development, emotional wellbeing, social interaction, self-regulation, independence and life skills. Through trauma-informed practice and strong relationships, we create a safe environment where pupils can engage successfully in learning and personal development.
We work closely with a range of external agencies, including Educational Psychology, Speech and Language Therapy, CAMHS, School Nursing and specialist support services, ensuring pupils receive coordinated and holistic support. Transition planning is a key aspect of our provision, and we work with mainstream schools, families and partner agencies to support pupils when joining Nyth y Deryn and when moving on to their next stage of education, training or employment.
At Nyth y Deryn, we believe that every pupil deserves an education that recognises their individual needs, celebrates their achievements and prepares them for a successful future. Through personalised support, strong partnerships and high expectations, we strive to help all pupils build the confidence, skills and resilience needed to thrive.
