At Nyth y Deryn, our curriculum is designed around the whole child — nurturing academic progress alongside emotional wellbeing, life skills, and personal growth. Every pupil's day is built on a foundation of care, curiosity, and challenge.
A Caring Start: Pastoral Care
Every day begins with pastoral time, where pupils share breakfast together in a warm, family-style environment. These sessions give pupils space to reflect on their progress, celebrate achievements, set personal goals, and talk openly about their emotions and the world around them — helping everyone feel settled, valued, and ready to learn.
Core Learning: Literacy and Numeracy
Our Languages, Literacy and Communication lessons help pupils build the confidence to speak, listen, read and write with clarity and creativity — discovering how communication connects them to others and the wider world.
In Mathematics and Numeracy, pupils develop a genuine enjoyment of numbers, shapes, and problem-solving, learning through practical, real-world activities that build both skill and confidence.
Learning with Purpose: Our Termly Themes
Each term, learning is shaped around a powerful central theme that runs across subjects: Curiosity, Conflict and Responsibility.
These themes give pupils a meaningful "big question" to explore, connecting classroom learning to their own lives and encouraging them to reflect on why it matters.
Creativity and Practical Skills
Pupils explore their imagination and individuality through Art, experimenting with materials and techniques while learning from artists and cultures around the world. In Cooking and Nutrition, they build independence and practical life skills, learning where food comes from and how to make healthy choices.
Active Bodies, Healthy Minds
Our Active sessions build fitness, teamwork and confidence through games and sport, while Diet and Nutrition lessons help pupils understand how food supports both physical and mental wellbeing.
Understanding Ourselves and Others
Through Emotional Literacy, pupils learn to identify and manage their feelings, build healthy relationships, and communicate with empathy and respect, supported by our Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) programme.
In Shaping Us: Society, Identity and Influence, pupils explore who they are and how family, culture and community shape their identity — developing a strong sense of fairness, respect, and responsibility.
Beyond the Classroom
Our Personal Growth programme of trips, guest speakers and enrichment activities extends learning beyond the classroom walls, building independence, teamwork, and a wider understanding of the world.
Our Life Skills programme prepares pupils for adulthood with practical guidance on careers, personal care, health, safety, and even the fundamentals of entrepreneurship.
Supporting Every Pupil: Social Development
We believe every pupil deserves support tailored to their needs. Pupils working toward their goals benefit from dedicated 1:1 pastoral support, while others choose from an exciting range of enrichment activities — from drama, dance and music to woodworking, sports clubs, forest schools, gardening, and more.
