At Nyth y Deryn, we recognise that for some of our pupils, a strict uniform policy can be a barrier rather than a support. In line with our trauma-informed ethos, we understand that clothing can be closely linked to a child's sense of safety, identity, comfort and control — and that insisting on a particular uniform can, for some children, create unnecessary anxiety or conflict before the school day has even begun.
For this reason, we do not require pupils to wear a school uniform. Instead, we ask that pupils wear appropriate clothing for their surroundings, the day's activities, and the weather.
This might mean:
Comfortable, practical clothing that allows pupils to take part fully in play, outdoor learning, and physical activity
Suitable footwear for outdoor spaces, our calming garden areas, and any off-site visits
Clothing appropriate to the weather, including warm layers in winter and sun protection in warmer months
Clean, appropriate clothing that supports each pupil to feel comfortable, confident and ready to engage in their day
We believe that removing the pressure of a formal uniform helps to reduce one more source of stress for our pupils, allowing them to start the day feeling settled rather than confronted with rules and expectations that may feel overwhelming. Just as we tailor our support to each child's individual needs, we take the same flexible, relational approach to clothing — trusting families to make the choices that work best for their child, while working together to ensure every pupil is dressed safely and appropriately for their day.
